Bathroom Exhaust Fan Weekend Install Survival Guide

7 things to check before you remove the old fan, buy the replacement, or cut the ceiling.

I built this checklist from the conditions I keep finding in real houses—because “replacement fan” does not always mean drop-in replacement.

Why I made this

I want you to find the problem before the old fan is on the floor.

I've watched “simple” Saturday replacements change course because the duct points the wrong way, a joist blocks the housing, the ceiling is thicker than expected, or the wiring cannot support the planned controls. The opening size matters, but it is only one part of the job.

The seven checks

Look at the house before you choose the fan.

Photograph before removing anything

Photograph the grille, housing, wiring, duct connection, labels, and anything visible above the ceiling. Those pictures give me a baseline when something does not go back the way I expected.

Measure the opening—and the cavity

A remodel-friendly label does not guarantee a drop-in fit. I check the opening, housing depth, ceiling thickness, joist direction, and obstructions before cutting.

Trace the duct size and direction

I want to know whether it is 3-inch or 4-inch, which direction it leaves the fan, and whether an adapter, elbow, or framing conflict is waiting out of sight.

Judge the complete exhaust path

Nominal CFM is not delivered airflow. Length, bends, crushed flex, fittings, restrictions, and the termination all spend airflow. A 110 CFM fan on a poor 3-inch system can lose to a lower-CFM fan on a clean 4-inch path.

Confirm it terminates outdoors

I do not consider the job complete if the duct ends in the attic. I verify the roof, wall, or approved exterior termination and make sure its damper can open.

Understand the electrical setup

Fan-only, fan/light, night-light, timers, and humidity controls may need different conductors or switches. I identify the existing wiring before promising the new controls will work.

Make a go/no-go plan

Before I start, I decide what would stop the job: unsafe wiring, inaccessible connections, blocked framing, roof work, damaged duct, or a ceiling repair I cannot finish. That is how I avoid a half-open ceiling and a last-minute parts run.
